ConAgra Implosion

Sunday was an exciting day. I went to the implosion of an abandoned building in Huron for the Sandusky Register and was able to bring my dad along as my assistant. Hundreds of people surrounded the little peninsula to watch the spectacle, including the cast of Haunted Collector, a SyFy show who had filmed an episode in the building, and Max Hinton, a 7-year-old whose Make-A-Wish dream came true when he pressed the detonator, crumbling the tallest building around.

We had six cameras surrounding the building and I was granted the job of editing the footage. It was fun to see it all come together and to hear the reactions as the building disappeared. To see more photos and read the story, click here.

I first met Walter Kobak when he was under a lot of stress. He was having difficulties getting a zoning permit to build a wheelchair ramp in his yard and feared what would happen to him in an emergency. When he had a doctor's appointment, the local police would stop by to carry him to his daughter's car.

So when I stopped back with reporter Melissa Topey, I was relieved to see him smiling and excited to show off how easy it was to leave the house on his power chair. Many people volunteered to help construct the ramp, and I have a feeling Melissa's story had something to do with the success.

Can we make them a Cowberry, herding the cows, or maybe a Muleberry pulling the plows, or maybe a Huntberry chasing the grouse, or maybe a Watchberry guarding the house, and though they may curl up at your feet oh so sweetly can you ever feel that you trust them completely?
Or should we make a pet out of something less scary, like the Domestic Prune or the Imported Cherry?
Anyhow, you've been warned and I will not be blamed if your Wild Strawberries cannot be tamed.

     Shannon Evans, a carpenter by trade and a stock car racer aficionado, was born and raised in Nelsonville, Ohio. He spent his boyhood climbing trees and dreaming of steering "big rigs" across the country. Once he became a certified semi-truck driver, he traveled from city to city with his cargo in tow but realized it was not the dream he had imagined it to be.
     Missing birthday parties and big events like picking up his son, Cris, from school when he broke his wrist, was not something he had anticipated. A life away from home was one he had not wished for, and Nelsonville was a long drive from any city. The small job market of a retired coal town was something he did anticipate, but Evans does his best to find carpentry jobs when the weather is suitable, as living in the country allows him to hear "the chipmunks chirping and the birds cheeping.” Though his wife of 21 years was from “the big city” of Columbus, she adapted well to country life and was pleased at the friendliness of the local people. His love of driving vehicles morphed into building his own stock car and racing it all over southeast Ohio and the surrounding states, but his family has trouble sharing this love with him.
     Cris, 16, is an artistic high school student who sees himself behind a computer for most of his life, as he studies video games and takes computer technology classes. Alyson, 13, loves animals and changes her dreams from week to week, varying from veterinarian to professional “dirt bike racer.” Her pink walls are dotted with photos of teen heartthrobs ripped from magazines. She knows that kids her age should be “outside for at least 60 minutes a day,” but enjoys watching the television in her room while her brother plays video games on the other side of her wall.
     Evans has trouble comparing his life filled with outdoors and manual labor to the life of computers and televisions his children lead. But every Saturday, the three look past their differences and head to Dow's Rollarena to enjoy their one common interest- rollerskating.

A tornado swept through southeast Ohio on September 16. A couple weeks later I had a photo assignment to do a story on a place for my final photojournalism class of my college career. The place I stumbled upon was Reedsville. I came across it by accident, just by exploring the countryside and trying to clear my head.

These are the people that I met and welcomed me onto what is left of their properties. They each have their own story of the night of the storms and are doing their best to rebuild their lives.

It's strange to look in my journal to see it's been just short of a year since I've written in it.

An event like leaving a restaurant after being seated to run across the street to a more affordable restaurant, leaving behind full glasses of water.
It's strange I smiled at that.

I'm wondering when I'm going to walk away from an assignment, start my engine and drive away feeling completely satisfied. I'm only satisfied when I'm looking through the viewfinder. Then as soon as I leave I think of all the things I should have done.

The fairy and the princess wanted the lion's attention and giggled at him, but he was in his own world.

I didn't know why I was drawn to this scene, why it was so interesting. When I finally made the connection, it only broke at my heart for a split second.

Negativity

I am a flamingo.

Two years ago I met this pigeon who thought my
pink feathers were nice, so he lured me into this
small cage where he kept me as his pet. I tried
to show him that I was more than hot feathers and
long legs, but he didn't need that.

He just wanted something to look at in his free time.

The seasons changed and the pigeon migrated, leaving
me alone, feathers dulled from my days enclosed in
that trap. But I got out. I realized pigeons just
get temporarily distracted by shiny things, while
I get distracted by the things that matter, like my
family. So I flew home, where time took it's time and
my color came back.

These are photos of negatives. Sent all the way to
Kansas to be processed, the film captured tiny squares
of the dullest time of my life. When I noticed a tiny
glimmer of being pulled out of that cage, I took a
picture. Though time has passed, holding that strip
of negatives sucks me back into the very scene they
hold.

I am relieved to never live those days again.
If a time machine was invented and I was paid a
million dollars to go back, I still wouldn't do it!
NEVER!

During sporting events, my bag full of gear hangs on my shoulder and threatens to snap my collarbone in half. I'm probably the funniest looking thing on the sidelines and more entertaining to watch fumble with lenses than the high schooler's fumbling with the footballs. Anyway, it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

Monica Rose

I had seen photos of Monica Rose around town, on bottles that collect money to help pay for her medical bills. But when I met her yesterday, I hadn't seen from those photos how gorgeous she is. Both the writer, Cory, and I were so impressed with how the 17-year-old held herself and how positive she was. She has been inspired by her nurses to work in the medical field and just by meeting her, I can tell this is a girl who will conquer whatever she wants, whether it be cancer or medical school.

A fundraiser for Monica will be held this Saturday from noon to 8pm at the Huron County Fairgrounds in Norwalk. To read more about Monica's story, Cory wrote a great article that also has information on how to donate if you are unable to attend Saturday. Here is the link.

Most people I know are guilty of taking photos out the window as they drive. On my way to Columbus over break, I decided to snap a photo anytime I saw a "For Sale" sign, because I noticed so many on my way back from school. This one stuck out to me.

I remember driving here with Alysha to get beef jerky with her dad when we were little. I remember standing in the sun, filling up the tank of my little white Grand Am in the summer. I remember driving past it in the snow after pulling an all-nighter for my first "real" photo story, as the sun rose with my excitement. And I remember pulling in there with barely a drop left of gas (too many times)... there's not another gas station for miles.

Whatever, it's just a gas station.

Blogger makes my photos look disgusting, at least on the computer I am using at the moment. Right now, they look alright, but let me know if these look horrible on your screen, because I toned them like crazy to try to keep the color. Thanks.

Pink Panties Drag Racing

I just started a story on a four-wheeler drag racing team called Pink Panties Drag Racing. The team is Maya and Macy Sherman and Jala and Jadyn Mace, all between the ages of 5-10. This past Saturday I went with them to their first race of the season at Little Sandy Raceway in Grayson, Kentucky and had a blast.

Back to the Wild

For my story on a caregiver, I visited Mona Rutger, the founder of Back to the Wild, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Castalia, Ohio. I remember going there when I was about ten and the place has grown so much since then. Over 2,500 wild animals are treated at the center each year. The center is non-profit and relies on support from the community and donations to keep running. Mona was also Animal Planet's 2006 Hero of the Year winner, which is pretty awesome. She likes how unpredictable her job can be and told a story about when she had to take a trip to the ER and had to explain exactly what happened to her: "I was carrying a fawn and fell over a tortoise!"

Mona holds a wooden spoon in the mouth of a great horned owl to prevent it from hurting itself or her as she shapes it's beak during the coping process. Birds beaks naturally overgrow when they are not in their normal environment.
Melissa Dodge, an intern at Back to the Wild, helps hold a snake as Mona Rutger uses a tool to find a PIT tag, a small computer chip used for identification and research purposes, that has been inserted into the snake's skin. The chip does not affect the snake.

Libby Boros, left, rubs a fish on the feet of a blind eagle to help it sense it's food as Mona Rutger helps to get the bird's attention. The eagle became blind after contracting West Nile Virus and will never be able to return to the wild.
A bald eagle flies around the corner of a flight cage, a building created for healthy birds that are ready to return to the wild to help them gain muscle strength and maneuver around corners. However, this particular eagle will never be able to return to the wild, as it will never fully recover from a broken wing. The bird is placed in this cage to help motivate other birds to fly once they are ready to return to the wild.

Now that I am back at school, I finally have the resources to update my blog. I had an awesome winter break. Colorado is my favorite state (though, not officially since there are 22 others that still have potential). The people there are so active- every bike rack I saw was full of bikes and every vehicle had a rack with either a bike, snowboard, or skis strapped on top. The weather never seems to alter anyone's need to be outdoors either.

Aside from the speeding Clause's, all of these photos were taken out the window as we traveled from one place to the next.

Go Green!

This years homecoming theme was Go Green. It's perfect cause recycling is like, SO in right now! Let's all make thousands of fliers and hand them out to people at the parade so they can crumple them up and throw them in the street as they stumble drunk to the football game!

Okay, so I was a little annoyed that the theme was Go GREEN and then Court Street looked like a dump the whole weekend and a little more annoyed that after the GREEN parade there was a GREEN jobs rally on College Green and about 15 people showed up.

The Harvest Dessert Musicale. Basically a talent show for the entire town.

Rosalie Rinehart performs a "comedic pantomime" to the song, 'Mama Yo Quero'. Before the show, I heard so much about the woman who would be dressing up like Carmen Miranda and performing. The entire place roared with laughter throughout the whole performance. In the middle of the skit, she took the banana out of her hat and ate half of it then put the other half in her shirt.

Dodging Tree Branches

This is what we had to drive through to get back to Athens that weekend. As Faye and I were driving to go have lunch with Jill, we drove past this huge tree that must have JUST fallen onto this woman's house. I had to stop, so Faye took my mini van and headed to lunch without me. I felt really proud of myself for stopping, because I know that a year ago I would have driven past and then thought all day about how I should have stopped at that house, why didn't I stop at that house!? But this time I actually did. Not the most creative stuff I've ever done, but I hate that feeling when I let a photo op pass me by and I was able to turn these in for my feature assignment.

Away from Athens

The past weekend was pretty exciting. Faye has tagged it as "a weekend for the books". It started out on Saturday driving to Columbus to attend the green jobs rally for Power Vote with other Sierra Student Coalition members. A full tank of gas and multiple confused text messages and phone calls later, we got there late and walked into a room full of fliers, poster supplies, markers and empty chairs. We were bummed.

Then we headed off to Dayton and ran into a very sad excuse for a playground at a TA stop to spend even more money that I don't have, on gasoline (I usually don't drive this much and use this much gas, I swear).

Finally getting to Faye's was a relief. She has one of the coolest houses ever. Everything is aged and collected from all over the place. I loved it.

Then we dodged falling tree branches on the way home on Sunday. But that's a post for another day.

Ten images? Is that too much for one post? It was a good weekend, what can I say...

My apologies for not posting more on Scotland. I've been slightly overwhelmed and without tools to get the job done.

Lewis and Lachlan

In Scotland with the Ohio University Field School and having tons of fun. I found Lewis Carmichael and Lachlan Imrie, both 13, at Glen Golf Club in North Berwick, Scotland, as they were hitting balls into the water and trying to hit seagulls. It was definitely the most beautiful golf course I have ever seen. It was in such a perfect location. I'm glad these two let me follow them as they finished their game.

Kayford Mountain

A couple of weeks ago I took a trip with the Ohio University chapter of the Sierra Student Coalition to Kayford Mountain, West Virginia. Larry Gibson hiked up with our small group to see what his backyard looks like: a mountaintop removal site. I did not know much about mountaintop removal before the trip and am still not sure how to look at the issue. But this guy sure is dedicated to what he does. I don't think I have ever seen someone so passionate about a subject even after 23 years of fighting for it.
